There aren't really as much as there seem. A lot of scales are just modes of the major or one of the minor scales (ie. keeping the same notes but starting from different scale degrees). I'd say start by learning the major scale in all seven ...(more)

Shouldn't the formula just be 36^n possibilities? The way I see it, if your melody only has one note and you are using one of their 36 distinct notes/rhythms then there are 36 possibilities or 36^1. By their formula there should be 36^(1-1)...(more)

In case you don't know, that was from an issue of Guitar One from a few months ago. I saw that one of the guys on YouTube said he'd send the tabs for it to anyone who asked, so that would probably be the best plan. Adrian

Adrian First of all, that was pretty good. Obviously you can still improve but everyone can always improve! Your picking hand technique looks pretty good, however I really think you need to work on your fretting hand. There is waaayy to muc...(more)

Man, why would you bring that up again? Do we really need this crap again after it finally has seemed to die down for a little while? If this little feud is that important to you then use private messages to deal with it but keep the rest o...(more)

Fareri is crap. His playing is sooo boring and unmusical. He is definitely using sweep picking for those arpeggios, not alternate. Yes, he is an excellent sweep picker and certainly better than Lane at that but Lane is a far superior alterna...(more)

Yeah, I'm not crazy about his vocal stuff. But they're worth tolerating to be able to listen to his amazing tone and playing. I also really like Becker and especially Gilbert. Michael Angelo I'm not too crazy about. Obviously his technique is...(more)

Yeah, Eric Johnson's amazing. I used to listen to him a lot. My only problem is that to me he's a little too laid back; I like players who are a bit more aggressive sounding. Still, he's a great, unique player with gorgeous tone. You might ...(more)

Yeah, Shawn Lane is insane. I will never put aside alternate picking. I will just practice it less and practice my sweep-picking technique more. That's good. I won't stop working on it until I can flawlessly and effortlessly play 16t...(more)

You clearly have misinterpreted my post. I am talking about the technique of alternate picking. To be able to consider yourself as having mastered that technique you have to be able to play very fast and cleanly. That's the entire point of wo...(more)

But doesn't Shawn Lane use oscillation picking? That's just a type of picking motion--the specific muscles that you're using. It's still alternate picking. It acually looks like you might be doing it too. Glad you didn't get offended....(more)

Okay, then what do you consider to be the criteria for a great picker?

No offenses but I would not say that you have mastered alternate picking by any means (and that's not to say that I have either). Here are some guys who have really mastered alt. picking: http://w...(more)

Yes, Les Pauls are significantly heavier than most other guitars (including basically all Fenders). Your typical Les Paul probably weighs about 10-12 pounds whereas your typical Strat or Tele (and probably most similar guitars) is about 7-8. ...(more)

One point of confusion here is the notion that what a player does at slow speed is the same as what they do at high speed. I think you may have misunderstood me. I didn't mean that they oscillate at lower speeds but don't at higher spe...(more)

Hi Andy, First, how do you define "oscillation"? This is one of my problems: I'm still not entirely clear on the motion. I have a good idea of it but I would like some confirmation. The classic example used is the motion of knocking ...(more)
