"and no, you are supposed to use all 4 fingers anf (sp) thumb for classical"
not true for fingerstyle, including classical. The only time most classical players use their pinky is when playing rasgueado (strumming like in flamenco style). The p...(more)

I haven't seen anyone mention the type of pickup you're using. A humbucker is pretty essential if you want any sort of good sustain. They do make some single coils that try to achieve this, but nothing beats a humbucker for the classic sustain. ...(more)

Neil - welcome to wholenote and to the wonderful world of guitar! Always happy to welcome another kindred spirit. The advice you have received on the A chord is good. I would suggest perhaps another technique which will help you when you eventu...(more)

Two words - Play Slowly! Now what the hell does that mean? It's absolutely critical that if you are learning anything on guitar (or any other instrument or skilled behavior for that matter) that you only perform at the speed in which you can p...(more)

Great story, I hope he gets to live up to his potential, but is also allowed to just be a kid as well. I'd hate to see him burn out because of all the attention on his ability. They don't mention much about his playing abilities, I guess he's ju...(more)

Nothing beats my Taylor 614CE Tobacco Sunburst for playability, tone and looks. I also have a Brian Moore I9.13 Electric which is also great to play and has tone to spare. But if I had to pick one guitar, it's easily the Taylor.

I have to recommend Guitar Pro, which is similar to Powertab. I have found after using both of these programs that Guitar Pro is much easier for me to use. There are thousands of free songs available to download, most at mysongbook.com includin...(more)

Never was a fan, but it's just another senseless act of violence with Dimebag and the audience members who lost their lives paying the price. With all the darkness in the world, musicians bring a little light (even if the music is heavy like Pa...(more)

This is a recurring theme, one reason is that so many people ignore the "simple" players for the flashy ones until eventually (in some cases, years) their ears tire of meaningless speed and they want to hear something with substance. Some of my...(more)

I liked that quite a bit. Nice and melancholy, very tasteful. Think I'll go have some hemlock now.

I think you hit the nail on the head as to why it's such a great thing to re-discover the guitar or any other instrument at an older age. Usually we are pretty set in our likes/dislikes by our mid thirties and we probably have a greater apprecia...(more)

Very thorough answer James. I have been getting into computer based recording myself, using a Digitech GNX4 pedal board and the usb connection it provides. I finally have broken down and decided to get a mixer, settling on an Alesis 8 track whic...(more)

Here's my favorite 10 today (not necessarily all time ever, I like to think some of us have a chance making the list at some point in the future, ok maybe a snowball's chance in hell, but that's still a chance):
Steve Howe
Pat Metheny
Eric John...(more)

Obviously there are alot of us. I resumed playing 8 months ago (at age 36, after a 15 year hiatus) and it has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life. I played around with the guitar when I was in my teens but I never committed my...(more)

This is an interesting thread. You're question is equivalent to "Why Are We Here?" although on a smaller scale. My passion for music is just something that is ingrained in my DNA, I can't explain why. It's as natural as breathing or needing to ...(more)
