Ack, my fault. I forgot to include a link. Actually, I sent it telepathically. You mean you didn't get it?<br/><br/>http://go.berkleemusic.com/alexismachine<br/><br/>p.s. The site design is Berklee's, not mine.

I've left the band Alexis Machine (which has since split up) and I'm now using the band's web site as my own self-promotional/self-indulgent site. Check it out when you are really, really bored.

Thanks. Are you referring to the song excerpts on the web site or the gig? The clips on the web site are very rough - I just hung a couple of mics and fed them into my minidisc recorder. Plus we hadn't planned on recording and weren't really ...(more)

Thanks for your interest, but in order to save money on postage I will probably stay within the US. However, I'll keep you in mind when it's time to send the manuscripts out and I'll see how much the postage will actually be. I don't wish to s...(more)

I'm in the process of writing a book on reading and playing rhythms which is specifically tailored to guitarists. The first part of the book (there are four parts) is basically in final-draft form and I was wondering if there was anyone who wan...(more)

What Schoenberg was trying to accomplish with 12-tone music was to treat all notes equally so that tonal centers would be avoided as much as possible. He devised the 12-tone system because he was unhappy with the unstructured approach to atonal...(more)

I recommend the book, "Counterpoint in the Style of J.S. Bach" by Thomas Benjamin. It has a great anthology of Bach pieces at the back. As far as what to listen to, just look around for anything in minor! I'm not a Bach fan so I can't recomme...(more)

You probably won't find the traditional melodic minor scale useful unless you are playing and/or composing baroque or classical music. One could write an entire book on the use of the minor tonality in the baroque and classical periods, but I'l...(more)

Notes that are a half step above chord tones (such as the F in a C chord - the F is a half step above the 3rd of the C chord (E)) are usually the notes you don't want to emphasize too much unless you like the resulting dissonance that is created...(more)

I'd just like to point out that most of the chords in your lesson would not be the types used in 12-tone music in general. If you look at Schoenberg you'll find a reliance on diminished, augmented, and quartal chords among other structures. Th...(more)

Since Takamine is a Japanese name I believe the correct pronunciation would be ta-ka-mi-ne. 'Mi' is pronounced like 'me' and 'ne' is pronounced like 'ge' in the word 'get'.<br/><br/>"Think I'll get me one o' them there tackameenies!"
