Two excellent music theory books I'd recommend are Keith Wyatt's "Harmony and Theory" from Musicians Institute Press and Arnie Berle's "Theory & Harmony for the Contemporary Musician" from Amsco Publications. I own the Berle book. Both of these ...(more)

Tony:
Sonny Sharrock was a great player with a truly unique voice on guitar. Ask The Ages was one his last albums I purchased. There's a slow tune, "Who Does She Hope To Be?" that has some really beautiful guitar solos, IMHO.

I agree with you about "Don't Take Me Alive". A brilliant Steely Dan tune, from my favorite album of theirs, 'The Royal Scam'. Larry Carlton plays great on DTMA and "Kid Charlemagne". His solos and fills on the album are perfect--great tone, tas...(more)

Agreed, Chris. 'Night of the Living Dregs' is my favorite album of theirs. Steve Morse smokes on "The Bash". "Country House Shuffle" and "Punk Sandwich" are also great tunes off of that album. Morse can play many styles, flawlessly.

I'd recommend 'Upside Downside', 'Jigsaw' and 'Standards and Other Songs' from Mike Stern.

I second Michael's suggestion. The book is "Music Reading for Guitar" by David Oakes.

There's nothing wrong with the White Stripes. I just think they're overly hyped and overrated. Their tunes are pretty good. There's something to be said for the back to basics garage band aesthetic, similar to when punk hit and The Ramones, Sex ...(more)

I agree with you about White Stripes. Strongly disagree about Clapton. Clapton's had a career that's included his work with The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (including the classic "Beano" album), an incredible body of work during Cream...(more)

The Squier Strat Chris recommends is a good first electric. I bought a Yamaha FG-Junior steel string acoustic for my three oldest girls, who are 5, 7 and 9. You're correct that the tone isn't always that great with a scaled down guitar, but the ...(more)

Very interesting, Jim. How about also incorporating the pinkie, which is usually represented by c, or chiquito. Eliot Fisk at The New England Conservatory has students practice the Segovia patterns, but uses all right-hand fingers:
Indice leadi...(more)

Paul:
Here are the specific right-hand fingerings Segovia suggests:
im, mi, ma, am, ia, ai, and imam.
i represents the indice or index finger
m, the medio or middle finger
and a, the anular or ring finger

For classical I'd suggest "The Legendary Andres Segovia - My Favorite Works", from MCA Classics The Segovia Collection. This is Volume 3 in the series and features Segovia's performances of pieces by Tarrega, Albeniz, Castelnuovo-Tedesc...(more)

I'd recommend picking up a good basic book on music theory and Edwards' "Fretboard Logic SE". The first two Fretboard Logic books (both of which are included in SE) use the CAGED system and provide a very practical way of looking at chor...(more)

Great job on this, fellas. I've always loved this tune. Kirk, the resonator sounds perfect on this melody.

I have to agree with you guys about Chet Atkins. One of THE finest players, period. I've been on an Atkins kick lately and picked up a 3 CD Retrospective Australian Import and 'Chet Atkins Plays Down Home Hymns', which was originally released in...(more)

Another excellent book that gets heavily into voice-leading is "Mel Bay's Complete Book of Harmony, Theory & Voicing" by Berklee Prof Bret Willmott. Here's an interesting voice-leading lesson...(more)
