Hello Noters -
Don't know what came over me tonight...must be the change in
the weather. I took a solo pass over a friend's tune tonight, and
I think I tried to choke my guitar to death. I've been rehabbing
from a nerve injury in my arm, so ...(more)

Haha...well, I don't know if I can endorse the "bake your way to
singing and playing" approach, but I agree that the way you
accompany yourself is key, and the best initial approach is too
simplify.
If you are playing solo, it can help if yo...(more)

I hear ya...especially when playing over a ii-V7....I often ignore the
ii chord and just play over the V7 chord either naturally or with
altered tones...the ii chord usually takes care of itself!
a m7b5 modal tune/vamp is pretty rare...

Hi Jon,
Great post...as usual, your comments are more concise,
eloquent, and easy to understand than any effort I could make.
I had a great big giggle when reading your imaginary Miles
conversation...haha...I've read the book about the makin...(more)

Okie dokie then.
Regardless of your opinions of Berklee, enough professional
musicians have been educated there that whatever terminology
they use is arguably largely the adopted language of most
modern musicians, especially in jazz.
After ...(more)

Sorry Jeff, but that is not an example of a "functional dominant"
in traditional theory. I studied harmony at Berklee and I don't
recall the topic of "functional dominants in modal harmony".
There was analysis of the tendencies of different d...(more)

Hi Jeff,
I have to tell you, I am a bit confused by your comments. I have
to agree with Jon on all his points.
Two things that stick out for me are the concept of functioning
dominants and tritone subs.
In my experience, the harmonic functi...(more)

Hi Bill,
Your question is somewhat complex, which is exactly the reason
I suggest starting with playing over one chord. As soon as you
add additional chords, you have to consider the overall harmonic
progression when deriving the appropriate...(more)

I think the first step in "lead playing" is learning to improvise
melodies. The easiest way to do that IMO is to play a scale over a
single chord. A good thing to do is to sustain each note of the
scale over the chord so you can really...(more)

We've had a smoking ban in NYC for years...in fact, it was one of
the first big cities to take it on. The same discussions and
debates took place....bars will go out of business, etc...
To date, none of it has proven to be true. The restauran...(more)
