Picking Up The Guitar
I like to say I started playing guitar because of Dave Matthews, although this is a half truth. I think Kurt Cobain played a role, too; though not much more than Dave Matthews. If I'm really honest with myself, I'd have to say Rod Stinson played the most significant role in my decision to play guitar.
Rod isn't famous, nor does he have an album out. Rod was a neighbor during my first year at college--which was last year. He was my roommate this year. From the moment I heard a guitar, right there, in front of my face, I was hooked.
Learning To Play
The first song I learned to play was "Come As You Are" by Nirvana. There's something tangible in the air the first time YOU play a song--that feeling of accomplishment. I still derive plently of pleasure from learning new music, but I think picking songs up by ear is so much more fun. To the guitar and more broadly music, I can say this: I'm forever addicted.
- Nirvana, Pixies, Rage Against the Machine
- Bach, Wagner, Pachelbel
- Velvet Underground, Dead Kennedys
- Nirvana -- All Apologies
- Rage Against The Machine -- Freedom
- Pixies -- Here Comes Your Man
