Rating: Hey, if you have a little cash ( about $150 on ebay) and you can get a solid wood vintage looking and sounding copy of a Martin you'd be crazy to pass this up. |
|
Price: $70 (used)
Where Obtained: Pawn shop

Features:
All solid woods. I had heard that Yamaha had made some nice solid wood guitars in the past, and after some research found that the FG's from this period were well regarded. I remembered a little Yamaha that I had seen in a pawn shop for $90, and went back and sure enough it was one of them. I offered $70 and they took it.Has a lot of rash and scratches but under the goo and dust the finish still shines. I have found no flaws. The tuners are open back, but I put some Martin silk-n-steel strings on and tuned her up and she plays like a dream, Great tone for blues! The frets are still good and the neck is still straight (adjustable truss rod). I give it a 4 due to the crappy tuners, even though it is all solid wood. |

Playability:
Very easy to play nice action after I reworked the saddle and made a very small neck adjustment. I am sure a bone nut and saddle would improve it but it plays so good now, why bother? |

Sound Quality:
Very nice full tone and loud for a small body. I used the silk-N-steel to lessen the strain on it just because of it's age. I am sure that some brighter strings like john pearse's would really take it over the top. I fingerpick on this one and it just makes you want to play the blues! |

Durability:
Are you kidding? Over 30 years old and neglected but still solid as a rock! The gloss finish must be Kryptonite. |
