This is a theory book written in conversational english for anyone to understand. It has humorous jokes and well drawn diagrams. It covers everything you need to know about music theory and some things you don't; however, the author let's you know what things you can skip if you want. This book is for all musicians and singers. There are exercises/answers in the book but not a whole lot, just enough to drive home certain points.
I would recommend that *absolute* beginners work with a friend with this book. There are a few concepts that might require a little help. But the vast majority of concepts can be grasped by anyone willing to actively read this book. I mean that this book isn't a novel. You need do stuff in order to remember and understand the theory. You can't just read about chord substitutions and expect to know exactly how they work in your head. You have to try a few to hear how they sound and I think this is true for any theory book. Lastly, the chapters are short which keeps the topics from overwhelming you. You can take in the theory in simple, bite sized chunks. In summary, if you're looking for a theory book that's easy to understand, look no further. |
