Rating:
This is perhaps the most sought-after, hard-to-find, and hyped overdrive pedal on the market today. In fact, a TS808 recently sold at eBay for nearly $650; the current market price for the TS808 is roughly $350-400. Nothing could live up to this hype and I would never pay a fraction of that for what this pedal does. I compared this 808 with a digital model of a TS9 (the one in my Line 6 AX2) for more than 2 hours and after some turning of knobs I can report that the digital model captures more than 90% of the 808's vibe. In fact, doubut anyone could tell the difference in a blindfold test. I can't even say that the real deal sounded better than the model. Rather, they sounded just a bit different. My recommendation is to pass on the vintage Tube Screamers and let the snobs with the money buy them. I was lucky to get mine years ago when SRV and Eric Johnson (the two guitarists most responsible for popularizing the Tube Screamers) were still relatively unknown. The TS808 is great but not for the money it commands.
Price: $50.00 (used)
Where Obtained: Doc's Music (Springfield MO)
Features:
Controls for overdrive, tone, and level. There's nothing fancy here.
Sound Quality:
This pedal is great for adding a midrange warmth to your sound anywhere from a purr to a slight growl. Thus, it is good for blues, some rock, and perhaps fusion. This TS808 sounds wonderful but like most analog gear it will sound best at higher volume levels. At low volumes it can sound harsh or granular.
Ease of Use:
No PhD required here.
Durability:
This one has lasted more than 20 years and is still going strong.
