Doug Jernigan's E9 Beginner Pedal Steel Course is an overview of the techniques to play the E9 10 string pedal steel guitar. He covers right hand string grips, some scale patterns, steel guitar licks and songs to include Rocky Top, Somewhere My Love, Heartaches by the Numbers, Cotten Eyed Joe and more. It is written out entirely in tablature but the problem is there is no rhythm notation. The included VHS is a great help to supplement the TAB. One drawback is that most entry level steel guitars only come with 2 knee levers and there are some licks that can't be played unless you have 4 knee levers as on a pro guitar. Don't get me wrong, I love Doug Jernigan and I think he is a fine teacher as is evidenced by his very popular clinics. He is also one of the world's finest steel guitar players! I just wish this set had a little more production such as rhythm notation and more close ups especially of the feet and pedals on the video. After all of that, I would still purchase this set as it makes a great companion to other books and videos and of course live lessons.
Suitable for all skill levels of guitarists
