This is the first program of this type that I have used, and so far I haven't been tempted to go elsewhere. It is now the only program I use when recording (with the exception of an external .wav editor for pitch correction and other such fiddles). As it's free, it's definitely worth a try before you rush out and buy an expensive package - you might find that KAE has all you need, and if not, it didn't cost anything anyway. So give it a go!

Ease of Use:
Learning how to use KAE was a case of trial and error for me, although there is brief documentation on the webpage too. There do seem to be some issues depending on sound card and sometimes just pure oddness that can prevent KAE from working on some systems. There is a users' forum to help with these problems, although I can't say how helpful they are since KAE worked straight away for me. The interface is fairly intuitive, and recording a multi-track project becomes very straightforward after the initial "getting-to-grips-with" period. Effects are easy to implement and adjust. The program lacks an internal audio editor, so to actually alter the recorded .wav files an additional program is required (Audacity works fine). All files are recorded as .wav files, so a project can end up taking up a significant amount of space - upwards of 500mb if you're utilising all 16 tracks.

Have you been wanting to contribute to one of Wholenote's add-a-track but did not have the software to do it? Or have you had that song in your head for a while and are finally ready to record it and show it to the world? This FREE software will allow you to do just that, and so much more. This multitrack recording software includes some features found only in expensive professional recording software. With ASIO support and other such goodies, Kristal is powerful enough for the seasoned musician and simple enough for newcomers to the world of computer music. Best of all, you can't go wrong with that price.
