This guitar left the factory and needed a lot more work to be playable. I was left in a position where I had to play and the guitar did not hold up. Right out of the box it had bad tuners, pegs, and bridge block work to be done, including a set up. It is obvious Larrivee is mass producing these guitars and are not doing an inspection before sending them out. Seems Larrivee got GREEDY. Don't buy one without a LOT of playing and inspection.
Model Year: 2006
Price: $1426.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Store front Larrivee dealer, Melbourne Fl.
Features:
I bought this guitar to record using a Lexicon Omega with Qbase software. It records well. It has a spruce top, rosewood back and sides, and a natural ebony fingerboard with a mahogany neck. The woods are nice and it has Fishman electronics that work very well.
Playability:
It plays good after a set up, neck work, tuner replacement, string peg replacement, bridge repair and new strings. I looked at and played another LV-03RE a few months before this purchase and did not expect the problems I had. My fault for not checking it out VERY closely before the purchase, and playing it more, but with a high dollar guitar one would expect this to be naturally taken care of at the factory.
Sound Quality:
The guitar does sound good and records well. It is very ballanced. I do a lot of finger picking and have no problems with the guitar bringing out highs while recording. It is a dream to use and you don't have to tweek the EQ at all after recording. Very little tone work. It is fantastic for that type of work. I have Fishman electronics on it and they seem to work very well.
Durability:
It seems durable but with the issues it has already had I don't see it holding up in the future.

I can't say enough good things about this guitar. my next guitar, were i to buy it today, would be a larrivee. this guitar is the entry level larrivee, too. imagine how much better larrivee guitars get as you move up their line. jean larrivee makes great guitars. check them out.

also check out santa cruz guitars. wholenote member alexis sanders reviewed his D-12 on this site recently. very much a quality guitar whose body goes to the 12th fret instead of the standard 14th. the sound is just plain nice.

Playability:
Have a reputable luthier set this guitar up for your preferred action. i play mostly folk and bluegrass, so mine is set up for ease of play, especially with the speed at which a lot of fiddle tunes are played. the 1 11/16" nut width is perfect for my hands. the satin finish on the neck makes it really easy to move up and down the neck. i have played many guitars which were two and three times the price that did not play as well as this larrivee. really can't say enough good things.
Sound Quality:
I do not play with an amplifier. i play in bluegrass circles two-three times a week. this solid wood guitar has a nice sound that will only get better with age. it has a nice punch on the bass notes. it also plays pretty full into the high strings. the tusq pins, nut and saddle sound much better than plastic, though i'll eventually move up to bone.
Durability:
I've only had this guitar for a few months as of may 2004. here in colorado, humidity is the key. in addition to the humidifier i keep in the case, i also take it in the bathroom with me when i shower. i close the door and leave it in there for a few hours. the ideal relative humidity is around 45%, which is difficult to maintain here. minor (1/4 turn or so) truss rod adjustments are necessary every couple months to keep it playing its best. just like anything else: the better you take care of it, the better it will play for a long time.
