The Man with the Horn

by Miles Davis

(1981) Columbia #CK 36790

Personnel Miles Davis (trumpet), Mike Stern, Barry Finnerty (g), Marcus Miller (b), Al Foster (d), Bill Evans (s sax), Sammy Figueroa (perc)
Description Early 80's Miles funk record that can be best described in two words - "Mike Stern". This was Mike's first recording with Miles and even though he only plays on one cut, he makes it count

I stumbled across this album while reading an interview with Carlos Santana on his picks for essential listening, and he mentioned Mike Stern and the cut "Fat Time" off this record, which is the only one he plays on. The record itself is OK, but "Fat Time" is just incredible. Marcus and Al lay down this great funk groove and half way through the tune Mike just takes off. It's amazing to hear hardcore bebop lines laced with Hendrix-type licks with a liquid, distorted Strat tone. After hearing this record, I started snatching up everything that Mike's ever recorded.
