Damnation

(2003) KOCH Records #KOC-CD-8652

Personnel Opeth's 7th release. Superb album! Metal band, but this release is a real departure from their previous releases.

Description Dark/ambient style album. Soothing vocals, beautiful lush melodies, and wonderful melodic solos. (although, there are very few)

Opeth has such a great ear for the dynamics of music and this album is a great example of it. This band never ceases to amaze me and have quickly become my current favorite band.

This is unlike anything Opeth has done in the past, since it is all clean vocals/guitar (well...some slight distortion at times) but there have always been hints of this side of them on each previous album. This album has not left my stereo since I bought it, and I am more amazed every time I listen to it. I don't want to repeat anymore of what has been said about it in previous reviews, so if you haven't heard it yet....what are you waiting for???

My opinion:

One word......"WOAH!"

Anyone familiar with Opeth knows damn well the incredible brilliance of this band. Now onto the actual description:

Compared to their previous releases, it's just as powerful! However, there are no heavy guitars, no growling vocals, no fast chops, no brutal distortion...Whatsoever! This is a complete departure from their last 6 releases.

Yet, it really doesn't suprise me that Opeth chose this route. Seems like something this band would have done anyway. And I might also add that, the actual music on this album is so moving, and takes the listener to another realm. The melodies are so lush, so powerful, so soothing. The vocals are smooth, calming, meloncholy, dark, and also very powerful.

I actually rate this album as one of their absolute best. This band is not afraid of change, and with their talent, they have absolutely no reason to be afraid of change. They do it so well! Opeth just keeps getting better & better with every new release.
