Rating: I'm a big fan of Chuck Berry and his guitar-playing. Many say he pioneered rock & roll, but if you listen to it's traditional blues played really fast. He has a knack for double-stops and his playing is heavily influenced by T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters. His lyrics are catchy, not very cliche, and very well written. This album only has 11 tracks (10 singles, 1 live) and most of them are his "essentials" like Johnny B. Goode and Roll Over Beethoven. Some may recognize "You Never Can Tell", which was the theme to the "Jackrabbit Slim's" scene in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. The remaster is well done, except the Berry's rhythm guitar work isn't as well amplified as his solo work. But, due to the recording capabilities of his time, the tracks may not have allowed them to increase the rhythm guitar without drowning out Chuck Berry's singing. It's a shame because Berry was also known as a great rhythm guitarist with his shuffles and sliding 7th chords to 9ths. This is a good CD, but if you're a big fan, go for the anthology! ^_^ |
