Rating:
These are the first flatwounds I tried. I've now got DRs on my Epi, but I'll definitely be going back to the D'Addarios. Lovely warm tone, lovely.
Price: $about12 ZAR161 (new)
Where Obtained: Andy McGibbon's Guitar World
Features:
Yup. This is the ticket. Hopefully the ticket to a ludicrous contract and throngs of adoring fans. (But I ain't holdin my breath on that one!) I play with the Lights, .010 to .052 gauge. Not only are they flatwound, but they're polished, like my playing... er, not.
Sound Quality:
I was very impressed with the tone. I flip to the neck pickup on my Epiphone Les Paul '56 Goldtop Reissue and I sound just like John Pizzarelli, or so I'm told. I currently have DR Legends on the guitar, but I'm like totally unimpressed with them and will be going back to the D'Addarios soon. They're so warm and cuddly...
Durability:
Flatwounds have a reputation for lack of longevity, but I didn't have that problem at all. My skin is very acidic so I make a point of wiping down my strings when I'm done playing - and so should you! They lasted at least as long as my normal strings, and I had no problem with pitch retention.
