I CHOSE THIS AMP BASED ON REVEIWS (I LIVE IN A REMOTE PLACE WITH VERY LIMITED CHOICES TO TRY FIRST). I TRY TO SUPPORT SMALL COMPANIES DEDICATED TO THEIR CRAFT AND REVEREND SEEMS TO. I WANTED AN ALL TUBE AMP TO PLAY BLUES AND ROCK WITH A FULL SOUND. THIS AMP DOES THAT VERY WELL. AT APARTMENT LEVELS IT SOUNDS GREAT AT MAX LEVELS IT IS INCREDIBLE. I PLAN ON BUYING THE 112 OR 410 CAB IN THE FUTURE TO FATTEN IT UP FOR MY EVENTUALL PLANS TO PLAY LIVE BUT I WOULD VENTURE TO SAY THAT THIS AMP COULD CARRY A MEDUIM SIZED ROOM. IT IS PROBALLY BEST SUITED TO BLUES/CLASSIC ROCK/AND PUNK MUSIC BUT IT HANDLES EFFECT REALLY WELL AND SEEMS TO ME TO BE A GREAT STARTING POINT TO BUILD TONE ONTO. IF SOMEONE RIPPED IT OFF I'D HURT THEIR FEELINGS AND MAKE THEIR MOM BUY ME TWO NEW ONES. THIS AMP IS THE REAL DEAL, COMPARED TO THE TWO FENDERS I MENTIONED ABOVE I'D BUY THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN. AS I PLAY THROUGH IT AND I LISTEN TO HOW GOOD IT MAKES ME SOUND I HAVE TO REMIND MYSELF THAT I PROBABLY STILL SUCK AND THE HELLHOUND IS DOING ALL THE WORK. THE REVEREND DIRECT PRICE AT $550 IS A GREAT VALUE. QUIT SHOPPING AND BUY YOURSELF A HELLHOUND, YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY.
Model Year: 2002
Price: $550.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Reverend Musical Instruments
Features:
TONE CONTROLS ARE GAIN, VOLUME, TREBLE, MID, BASS, PRESENCE, AND REVERB. IT HAS AN EFFECTCS LOOP BUT NO CHANNEL SWITCH, HOWEVER, IT DOES HAVE A 'SCHIZO'SWITCH THAT ALLOWS YOU TO SWITCH BETWEEN US (OLD TWEED, FENDER BASSMAN TONES) AND UK (VOX/MARSHALL MID PUNCHY). IT CAN BE SWITCHED BETWEEN 40 AND 60 WATTS OF POWER. 40 IS PLENTY FOR ME BUT PLUG THIS INTO A CAB AND SWITCH IT TO 60 AND IT'LL SCREAM. IT IS AN ALL TUBE AMP INCLUDING REAL TUBE SPRING REVERB, NO BIAS ADJUSTMENT WHICH I THINK IS NICE. 2 6L6GC POWER TUBES AND 4 12AX7 PREAMP TUBES ALL RUSSIAN MADE BY ELECTROHARMONIX. THIS IS A BARE BONES AMP, ASIDE FROM THE SCHIZO AND WATTAGE SWITCHES IT IS LOW ON THE FEATURES. THEY SENT ME A NICE COVER TOO FOR FREE.
Sound Quality:
I PLAY A STRATOCASTER THROUGH A TS9 TUBE SCREAMER AND A DOD WAH. MOSTLY BLUES AND ROCK. I BOUGHT THIS AMP PURELY ON REVIEWS AND I AM NOT DISAPPOINTED. THIS AMP PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL CLEAN TONES (OLD FENDER) WHICH ARE RICH AND WARM WITH CRISP HIGHS ON U.S. MODE. IT HAS A GOOD AMOUNT OF CLEAN HEADROOM WHICH CAN BE INCREASED BY REPLACING THE FIRST PREAMP TUBE WITH A 12AT7 WHICH I WILL DO. THE CLEAN BREAKS UP WELL WHEN PUSHED. I WASN'T SURE IF I'D BE INTO THE U.K. MODE WHEN I GOT IT. IT IS REALLY NICE THOUGH. VERY DRIVING WHO/PUNKISH TYPE MIDS AND VERY CRISP, NOT JUST SOME APPROXIMATION BUT REALLY GOOD BRIT SOUNDS. IT PICKS UP MUTED NOTES AND HARMONICS REALLY WELL TOO. I RETURNED A HOT ROD DELUXE AND A 65 R.I. TWIN REVERB TO GET THIS AMP. THERE IS HARDLY NO COMPARING THIS AMP TO THE HRD. IT IS VIRTUALLY NOISELESS, THE GAIN IS MUCH CRUNCHIER, WELL DRIVEN NOT FUZZY OR OVER BLOWN, THE CLEAN TONES BLOW THE HRD AWAY, AND THE REVERB HAS THAT REAL FILL THE ROOM, OLD FENDER QUALITY (NOT SOLID STATE HRD SO SO REVERB, THE HEADROOM ON THE HRD TOPPED OUT AT LIKE 5 THE HELLHOUND DOESN'T BREAK UP UNTIL LIKE 8 OR 9.. IT'S NOT IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS THE TWIN REVERB BUT I WILL SAY THE LOWS ARE BETTER WITH THE SAME QUALITY HIGHS, THE REVERB IS EVERY BIT AS GOOD, AND IT HAS GAIN WHICH THE T.R. DOES NOT. A HUGE PART OF THE SOUND IS THE SPEAKER WHICH BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN EVERYTHING (I UNDERSTAND IT IS BASED ON A JENSEN C12 BUT HAS A SEEMLESS CONE)IT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT AS LOUD AS THE T.R BUT DON'T BE SUPRISED, THIS THING WAILS. IF I COULD I'D RATE IT HIGHER THAN A FIVE.
Ease of Use:
SUPER EASY BECAUSE IT'S SO BASIC. THEY HAVE SOME RECOMMENDED SETTINGS IN THE MANUAL TOO WHICH WILL GET YOU TONES LIKE OLD TWEED, BRIT CRUNCH, ETC. I LIKE TO PLAY WITH THE BASS AT 8, TREB AT 7, MID AT 4, PRESENCE AT 6, GAIN AT 4, AND JUST A HAIR OF REVERB. I TURN THE BASS DOWN AND MID UP WHEN I SWITCH TO U.K. MODE.
Durability:
SEEMS TOUGH. THE TOOLED TOLEX COVER IS REALLY CLASSY AND COOL LOOKING. IT'S PRETTY LITE, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING WHAT IT CAN DO. THE HANDLE RATTLES A BIT AT HIGH VOLUMES OTHERWISE THE CHASSIS SEEMS TIGHT. I DON'T PLAY LIVE AND HAVEN'T HAD TO REPLACE TUBES YET. IT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE AS DURABLE AS THE FENDER CHASSIS, IT CERTAINLY IS NOT AS HEAVY SO MAYBE THAT IS DECEIVING. I HAVE EMAILED REVEREND 4 OR 5 TIMES AND JOE NAYLOR OR ONE OF HIS MANAGERS GETS BACK TO ME QUICKLY. I ACTUALLY ORDERED ONE FIRST FROM MUSICIAN'S FIEND WHICH CAME DAMAGED IN SHIPPING THEN THEY DISCONTINUED WHEN REVEREND WENT DIRECT. REVEREND ADDRESSED MY CONCERNS WELL AND ASSURED ME THAT THEY WOULD SHIP A GOOD ONE IN ONE PEICE. THEY DID.
