Rating: This disc is a little heavy on the vocals, which Kottke covers all by himself. Kottke has described his singing as "Geese farts on a muggy day"- it's really not all that bad, though, and certainly adequate for the folk tunes he sings here. However, Kottke's guitar is what we pay to hear. Of the 14 tracks, only 6 are instrumentals. My favorite is the last song of the album: "The Train and the Gate, from Terry's Movie". Of the songs with words, "Everybody Lies", and "Sonora's Death Row" are standouts. The lyrics are dark, but the playing is pure, sweet Kottke.
Not essential Leo, but a good listen. |
