I classified this disc as "other" rather than "rock" or "alternative" because it spans several different genres. Most of the disc maintains a rock feel, but there are prominent jazz, folk, and just plain different cuts, too. There's also shredding a-plenty from guitar phenom Trey Anastasio on here, for fans of the screaming electric guitar solo. Just listen to the first cut, Llama for a sample of his warped style of lead playing.
The playing by all the members is tight, but don't think the compositions are just vehicles for instrumental excess. There are lots of great tunes on this album, complete with trademark quirky Phish lyrics ("But who can unlearn all the facts that I've learned; I sat in their chairs and my synapses burned."- from Chalkdust Torture). Oh yeah, Stash has one of the coolest guitar riffs ever.
Phish's finest.
