by Dream Theater

(1994) Atlantic

Personnel John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy on guitars.
Description This is an epic recording by Dream Theatre, with a wide variety of rhythms, themes, time signatures, and solo endeavors by Petrucci and Portnoy. It is steeped in difficult sweep and alternate picking techiques while maintaining a soothing sound.

This is the one. This DT album highlights the musical mastery of this band and I've heard all the albums. Being a dedicated DT fan I have to admit that even after having the CD for quite sometime, that I listen to it from start to finish at least once a week. Being a guiitarist, Awake is certainly a treat to listen to. That John P. is certainly one of the great ones. Listen to the song "6:00" guys and gals. It'll blow your head clean off. :-) (Ok well maybe not, but you get the point.)

This is what I consider to be their best album. I don't really think they're could have been too much improvement on the musical demonstration on this CD. I really enjoy the fourth song on the album, Erotomania, for its diverse rhythm and time signatures. It has a alternate picking clinic by Petrucci. Petrucci is reminiscent of Malmsteen's superb quickness and alt-picking ability. It is a must have for the DT fan. I am very pleased with my purchase.
