I would buy it. If it gets janky on you ... send it back and the people of carvin will make it unjanky.
Model Year: 2001
Price: $456.00 (new)
Where Obtained: Carvin Catalog
Features:
The carvin sx400 has been a great amp thus far. It provides a variety different effects such as reverb, echo, flange and chorus. The flange allows a very raunchy sound to my metal grooves( if used sparingly). I feel that they reverbs could have been better but with three different reverbs you cant complain.
Sound Quality:
The amp is has preformed well in any style i have used it for. Such as jazz, blues, and metal. It is the only carvin i have owned and i am happy with it. I think the distortion could have been a little thicker. It gets a little thin in high volume situations.
Ease of Use:
You have to a real knob not to figure this amp out.
Durability:
This amp is making some funny noises. I have only owned for a year and already i am having some "issues". My foot petal broke. Now i am getting some funny noises from it at random (arrggh). It is also making stupid fuzz noises all by itself. I called carvin.... They asked me to send it back. So yippie for honest patrons. NO problems since.

I would not buy this amp again if i were to get a new one, because this amp is a great amp,but it is not very high quality compared to other amps out there. This amp is defintly better than the crate power amps but not as good as the more expensive power amps.
Price: $400.00
Where Obtained: freind
Features:
Three band EQ and a presence knob, reverb and distortion. It has an effects loop, and comes with a foot pedal to switch between channels. It is a solid state amp.
Sound Quality:
I play a '83 gibson explorer and play thrash and it works well. The distortion sounds crappy,so i use my own. This amp is a few years old and has started to f--- up. The mid range knob on the EQ doesnt work any more so I have no mids ever, but i dont mind because i always cut all the mids out any way.The presence and bass controls cant be adjusted while the amp is on becasue they make the loudest horriblest noise youve ever heard. But as long as you dont adjust those thing while the amp is on is sound good.
Ease of Use:
This amp is easy to use but i dont understand the effects loop.I dont think that there is anything wrong with it,I just dont know exactly what to do with it. I have tried using it but it does nothing.
Durability:
It is reliable enough.I have used this amp to play all over town and it gets banged up and slammed through walls but it works fine.It is covered in a grey carpet thing so it never gets scratched or dinged up.
