My very first record back in 1972, and still one of my favorites. Sure, as a kid, it was for the simplicity and groove of "Smoke On the Water" but later I found "Lazy" to be my favorite track.

One of the best hard rock albums EVER. A complete must have. Every track is solid, you just put it on and go. Was recorded live instead of a normal studio album, and it sounds awesome.

The album starts explosively with "Highway Star" and never lets up until they break into "Lazy" with it's haunting organ intro that segues right back into feverish guitar playing by Blackmore. It closes with "Space Truckin'" which received radio airplay. A well done production that's amiable. This record, compared with their others really stands out front and center. All the playing and singing is flawless. It's also the album that bears one of rock's most recognizable riffs, "Smoke on the Water". Because of the band's recording situation, that closeness is felt in the groove. I've admired this record since it's release. I highly recommend this album. NOTE: The catalogue number pertains to the reissue. You get 2 cd's; one is remastered and the other is remixed. The remix version contains an alternate guitar solo in "Smoke on the Water". Both CDs contain the bonus track "When A Blind Man Cries". Also in the remix cd, you get 2 quadrophonic mixes, "Lazy" & "Maybe I'm A Leo".
