This book is a step-by-step method to achieving correct form. Jamey addresses the need for relaxation, awareness of tension, and other subtle details often overlooked. Much of this information can be found else where but not in one single book. I would rate this book a five-star but there is a concern that I have.

I disagree with one aspect Jameys left hand form. In almost ever picture of his left hand his wrist is bent. Jamey never explains the importance of keeping your wrist strait, I have a friend who allowed their wrist to bend uncontrollably and can no longer play do to carpal tunnel.

If you purchase this book, I would highly recommend you buy Pumping Nylon by Scott Tennant. Pumping Nylon covers close to everything that Jamey missed or saw out of the scope of his book.

After toiling away, reinforcing bad habits, praticing ineffectively and so on for 9 months, I discovered, "The Principles." The books unique approach is unique among books I've seen and read. The book includes mental aspects of playing that have enabled me to make my practice time much more effective. The left and right hand exercises have helped me understand and begin to improve my playing ability in a matter of days.

Much of what is in the book is nearly common sense, but not obvious to a beginner. It's based on Jamey's many years of experience as a player and teacher. I wish I had this book when I started....

Being a student of Jamey Andreas for nearly four years, I can promise you that his techniques and excercises will make you a better player. Jamey pays attention to the aspects of practing guitar that most teachers often overlook. We have all had those teachers, haven't we? I can assure you, it is at least worth checking out.-Stephen Maxwell
