In addition to the excellent Silver & Gold
CD release, Warner Reprise Video has released a DVD with the same title. The DVD is essentially a concert video recorded live at the Bass Concert Hall in Austin, Texas. The 62 minute video begins with Neil
walking on the dimly lit stage and take a seat in the middle of a circle of acoustic, stringed instruments - various guitars and a banjo. In addition, there is a piano and "pump organ" which are both used by Young
during the concert. In short, this is a thrilling look at Neil Young
as a solo artist. The camera work is generally good and provides both close-up and distant views of the performance. The video includes 12 live songs and a 13th recorded in a studio. Several of the new songs from the Silver & Gold
CD are performed, albeit arranged differently for a solo performance. The highlight of the show for me was the performance of "Daddy Went Walkin'" a stirring, highly emotional song in my mind. The DVD format makes the video very compelling - the quality of the sound and intimate stage setting make you feel like you're getting your own personal show, and you couldn't ask for more.
