If I had known about the quality of this instrument earlier, I could have saved myself a lot of money. I would have bought one years ago. If you can find a good used one try it!
Model Year: 1987
Price: $275.00 DM 550
Where Obtained: Used from the Internet (ebay)
Features:
Comes with Hamer "Slammer" pickups (see below for sound) and in my opinion one of the best tremolo systems that was ever produced: a Kahler (as far as I know, Kahler unfortunately doesn't exist anymore).
Playability:
Felt at home with that guitar at once. I have the feeling that I play better on that neck and can play things I was not able to play before. Great stage guitar!
Sound Quality:
I own an American Standard Strat and always wanted a Strat with a humbucker in the bridge position. I just didn't want to modify my Strat so I was looking for a cheap alternative. Bought the Hamer used on ebay (Germany). I had heard they made good guitars so I expected a quite decent instrument. When I plugged it in, I was nearly blown away. The single coil sounds are at least as good as my Strat's and the humbucker makes this guitar a rock player's dream. It's not a guitar for "soft" music - the pickups have a lot of power and brightness, so for ballads I still use my Strat. But the single coils sound great for blues and crunchy rhythm and the humbucker's the real deal for heavy rhythm and lead.
Durability:
I got it used, it's about 13 years old and everything (hardware, electronics ...) works perfectly. It seems that the former owner really used it as a workhorse (several bad scratches and dents) and the fact that everything works indicates very good durability in my opinion.
