August and Everything After

by Counting Crows

(1994) Geffen

Description This is a good blend of fast and slow songs. I didn't like it at first, because I like heavier music, but it grew on me. The acoustic guitars add to the music.

A very good CD. Definitely has its own feel to it, sort of a grown up angst (as opposed to teenage angst). Adam Duritz' voice and vocal style are perfect for this sort of music. There's a variety of songs here: fast ones and slow ones, but all within the same general ambience. My personal favorite here is "Rain King". I think I just like that chord progression, and especially the chorus. If you like the Counting Crows from what you've heard from the radio, you won't be disappointed here.

From start to finish this is an excellent cd. Although the lyrics themselves are too personal for the most part for fans to relate, Duritz sings with such emotion it its hard to pull away. Only one drawback can be found on this cd in my opinion and thats that it ends.

I love this album, the high point being "Round Here"or something like that, I don't usually read the names of songs. If emotion is the most important thing in music which I beleive it is then this is one of the best songs ever. "She looks up at the builtding, says she's thinkin of jumpin, says she's tired of lifeshe must be tired of something" Adams voice is so expressive in this song. I found the "hit single" Mr. Jones much more distant and forgettable ,but that a side counting crows is a good well rounded band
