I know some people find this record hard to appreciate because it's not one of his later shred-fests, but you have to listen to it with 2 things in mind:

1. Steve had come from Frank Zappa's band, and was heavily influenced by it here. If you're not a fan of Zappa, you probably won't get these songs.

2. Most of what you're hearing had never been done before. What we now take for granted in sounds, effects, and tricks was invented on this album.

I love this very strange recording. It sounds like Steve just having fun and doing whatever he wanted in his little blue studio in his back yard. This was produced and distributed straight from Vai's pocket and it sold 500,000 copies. Not bad for goofing off in your back yard. The songs are eratic and some a bit strange(very stange) but thats what I like about Vai; you just dont know what he'll do next.

Buying this was a horrible mistake for me, think of Steve Vai, most think of blistering guitar shredding that will blow you away. I enjoyed two songs out of this whole album, the only two real instrumental songs. The rest was absolute garbage, him making wierd alien sounds with his guitar, playing behind the voice of a lady talking, and other very unusual stuff. I give it 2 stars for those two reasonably good songs. Got money to waste? Buy G3: Live in Concert by Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson, an AWESOME ALBUM

The playing here is incredible, if occasionally misguided-although I am not quite sure that I completely understand certain tunes, I think this is the best of Vai-quirky, unique, and adept.

Heavily influenced by Zappa, obviously. I love it when the voice says, "Just go for it" followed by Vai tearing into the guitar. Interesting and offers an alternative vision of what guitar "has to be"

Pretty cool tunes on this recording along with some that makes you scratch your head. Steve's playing is phenomenal and quite creative. He actually makes guitar playing sound fun. I really enjoy this CD.
