This album is a must for anyone who is trying to delve into the depths of blues history. Patton is considered to be one of the major influences on both Robert Johnson and Son House, and is perhaps the first delta bluesman to have attained name recognition in the region. Patton has a great driving style, although a lot of the songs are a little more folksy than what most now consider the "delta" blues style. He's got an excellent gravelly voice (judging by his articulation, I'd say he's drunk a lot of the time), and his guitar playing is quite tasteful, although not virtuoso by current standards. The guy definitely can play the blues -- check out "Stone Pony Blues," "Pony Blues," or "High Water Everywhere" for the patented Patton blues shouting. His more folksy stuff is also pretty cool, as in "Spoonful Blues" (later popularized by Clapton in Cream) and the risque "Shake it and Break it". Unfortunately, these cuts are taken from old 78s, so the sound quality is pretty poor. But if that's the only way to get access to this old master's cuts -- it's worth it.
