P.O.D. Guitarist Quits

Marcos "pursuing own vision" after eleven years
Posted Feb 19, 2003 at 12:00am
More than a decade after co-founding P.O.D., guitarist Marcos Curiel has left the band to pursue other musical interests.

"It saddens me to say that Marcos is no longer with P.O.D.," frontman Sonny Sandoval wrote in a Web post. "[He] has chosen to pursue his own vision apart from P.O.D."

The band is in the process of writing the first single for the upcoming Matrix Reloaded film, and was scheduled to go into the studio this week to begin recording the follow-up to 2001's multi-platinum Satellite. Sandoval assured fans that P.O.D. would carry on without Marcos, and they've already found a replacement in Jason Truby, formerly of the Arkansas metal band Living Sacrifice. "[Truby] brings an excitement and a fire to the table that will take P.O.D. to the next level," Sandoval wrote.

Unlike many modern rock bands, P.O.D., who formed in San Diego in 1992, have always been a tight-knit band. After the success of their Atlantic debut, Curiel said, "It's definitely the fact we've been friends so long that helps keep us grounded."

"I've got to slap Marcos around once in a while to keep his big head from blowing up," Sandoval joked at the time, adding, "We're brothers. Each of us does our own thing, but we keep each other in check. That's how brothers do it though."
