Neither Prodigy

Growing up, there had always been this old acoustic guitar sitting in the corner of our living room that no one in the family could play. When I was in the second grade, I begged my parents for lessons.

I learned "Red River Valley" and "Tom Dooley" and tried to learn JT's "Fire and Rain" but quickly decided that I hated practicing.

After only a couple of months, the guitar went back into the corner, where it stayed for a few years.

In the sixth grade, I started taking lessons from a country-music journeyman named Daune Dee, who lived down the street. "Mr. Dee" taught me a lot about what could be done with a guitar. And I actually began to enjoy practicing, partly because I thought playing guitar would look cool to chicks.

My toys

In eighth grade I convinced my parents to give me an electric for Christmas (a decent Les Paul copy with a good Peavey practice amp). I played this mostly in the high school jazz band and sold it when I got to college.

Now I'm a 30+ husband and father. My current setup is a Taylor 314ce strung with D'addario EJ16 Lights. I use this mostly in liturgies at St. Stephen Catholic Community and the occasional church party and summer musical.

I'm also working on an acoustic duo project with a friend. We're working the open-mic circuit for now. Maybe we can start playing for beer soon.

I also have a Yamaha APX-4A, usually tuned to open D, and a Washburn 104SCE. There's also a Taylor 110 for camping trips and the beach.

I usually run my guitars through an AG Stomp preamp. I keep a Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble in my bag for backup. There's also a DS-1 in there for the occasions I borrow a friend's strat and pretend to be a rock star. I use a Fender Acoustasonic Jr. amp for solo and small-group gigs.

I can often be found hanging out at the Acoustic Guitar Forum, formerly the Taylor Guitar Forum.

G.A.S. List

My wife keeps asking what that steadily-expanding envelope full of five- and ten-dollar bills on the fridge is for. It's for these, honey:
  • Boss BR-532 Digital Recorder
  • Taylor 655e
  • Fender American Strat
John Michael Talbot U2's The Edge
Scarecrow & Tinmen Keb' Mo'
Here's who's in my CD player lately.

I play in an ensemble at church and occasionally in a middle-aged rock band (for which I borrow a friend's strat). But I also enjoy banging out acoustic/folk and alternative-leaning stuff on my own. The current set list in my bedroom includes U2, Jennifer Knapp, Switchfoot, R.E.M., James Taylor, Jars of Clay, Chris Rice, Scarecrow & Tinmen, Keb' Mo',Tom Booth, and The Barenaked Ladies.
