G3 tour?

I am wondering if any other WholeNoters have been/are going to see the G3 tour this year. I have tix for the Atlanta show, Jul 19th. I am curious to see what John Petrucci does without Dream Theater backing him up. And of course, I can't wait to see Satch and Vai wailing away.

awesome! saw them last night in NYC. was a bit extra special because each of them grew up on Long Island (NY) where i'm from.
very punctual show, ran lock clockwork.

let me qualify by saying i love satch (but never saw him), didnt know much of vai, and knew nothing of petrucci.

petrucci started off. excellent! i love his sound/style. plays a beautiful signature-model Ernie Ball guitar - looks like it plays like velvet. used Mesa Boggie head/cabs.

next came vai. sorry-not my cup of tea. he's too flashy for me. his guitar wasnt cutting thru the mix as well as john's. he played his signature ibanez thru his signature Carvin Legacy amp/cab. in my opinion - vai is like 33% show, 33% noise, 33% fast playing. too much noise and whammy bar stuff for me. hair blowing in the fan...too much.
actually, i think vai's best work was during the end pieces where they all played together.

...so as not to get cut-off...i better continue on a separate post........

....so anyway.........

then comes Satch. wicked! played his chromeboy ibanez thru Mesa Head and Marshall & Mesa cabs. i think he also used a clear (see-thru) ibanez.

he was excellent of course. kinda like a blend between vai and petrucci...a little of the showman that vai is, yet a bit of the more humble...just get up and play - like petrucci.

i dont know all his song names, but he played lots of favorites: Flying on a Dream, Surfing w/the Alien, Satch Boogie, Always with Me..,Love Thing, Trundrumbalind,Ceremony, Rasberry Jam. wish he had done house of bullets.

then they all come out. like watching three bolts of lightening on stage!!

get read for this - did a ZZTop tune, Voodoo Chile, Little Wing (a la Hendrix), and Down(?) by Jeff Beck. excellent, fun stuff. trading riffs..like i said i think vai sounded best here..cause he had to sorta conform to the songs, and play shorter segments.

well, thats enough. i now know i wanna check out a lot of the stuff from petrucci and dream theater.

have fun if you're going. enjoy.

G3 means Guitar3.
It's Joe Satriani,Steve Vai, and John Petrucci of dream theater.
They each do a 45 minute set then at the end they all come on and do another 45 minute set of covers.

also, the members can change. although it seems to be anchored by Satch (the head honcho?) and steve vai. last time around they played with eric johnson.
i'd LOVE to see them with Steve Morse!!!

Well that was a rather mature reply... anyway I just checked and you are somewhat correct.

96 Eric, Satriani, Vai (the first G3 tour)

97 Kenny, Satch, and Steve... and Robert Fripp

98 Joe Satriani, Uli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker

99 Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson

2000 Joe was doing Engines Of Creation tour

and we know who is in store for us this year.

Nigel I dont know you from Adam so why should I take what you have to say as fact, especially with the way you phrased yourself?

If you said your wrong man I went to the first two concerts, or go this web page and see for yourself I would have taken you for face value.

Yeah Satch is my favorite. I only like Petrucci solo, the singing in dream theater makes it impossible (For me) to sit through a song of theirs.

Go here to listen to some of their stuff.

My friend loves Dream theater, you might like them too... I don't know. The singing is progressive type stuff.

In my opinion the vox in DT arent that bad... in fact sometimes I like them a lot, but yeah sometimes they arent my "cup of tea."

ANyway as soon as I read your post I thought "LTE", as Shawn said. There is Liquid Tension Experiment and LTE 2. Both are very excellent.

Ward, if oyu remember from the show, the last song of JP's set... was actually a medley type deal.... IT started out with "paradigm shift" which is an LTE song, (minus the keys of course) then plauyed most of that then went into the second half of "Erotomania" which is a Great (and instrumental by the way) Dream Theater song. Then it ended with the end of Paradigm shift. Imho JP is a better "team player" than solo artist a la Vai/satch. Especially those Wicked wicked unison lines with keys and bass. iTs amazing.

John Petrucci might actually release a solo album, whichwould probably consist of the songs he wrote for this g3 tour.

And on a side note, Steve Morse could kick all these guys asses simultaneously.
