Yeah, most likely. You don't have to worry about hearing loss or tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears) unless you're dealing with prolonged or repeated exposure or truly ridiculous noise levels. If you ever start doing this for a living, though, Katie, you may want to consider either earplugs or turning down a bit =).

You should be wearing ear plugs! Hearing damage cannot be fixed once you have it! You probably don't have any (or much, because everyone has some) yet, but you must protect your ears!

It would really suck, if it ends up so that you can barely hear all the great little nuances of music, just because you didn't take the time to wear ear plugs! Even at concerts, wear them... if anyone tells you that it's "not cool", they are morons and you shouldn't listen to them! They'll be real cool when they can't hear in 5 years!

Hmm well, trust me on this one.. one day it won't go away. I'm sure they have earplugs that you can't really tell are there, if you're worried about the looks... or heck, get flourescent ones. Like the previous post said, you lose your hearing you'll lose all those nuances... quiet nights, someone whispering something nice in your ear, etc. No clue what caused mine but once they invent a time machine I'm scaring the poop out of my former self and giving him good quality plugs.

Katie, these folks are right. Once you start experiencing hearing loss (and you won't know for awhile) there's no repairing it. So please don't take these replys lightly. Every so often this subject comes up in the buzz.

It took a couple decades of loud music for many musicians to realize that they lost some of the high pitch response in their own hearing. Ask Pete Townshend, he lost the hearing in one ear, all in one night. A freak accident, but still could have been prevented. But in those days, nobody cared!

Many musicians wear new technology ear protection now, that they say really doesn't affect the quality of a show, or performance.

So it's earplugs or a miracle ear. I prefer the plugs.

Katie... I can no longer attend rock shows, just can't. Ears can't handle em. Blew out my ears playing rock ... the shows didn't do it, the rehearsing did, rehearsing at stupid levels for hours at a time. It was really fun... and then after a while it started to hurt (at which point I had already done really permanent damage) and then finally it felt like the drummer was literally drumming on my ear drum. Tried to play with ear plugs then, but ear plugs suck. My ears rang so loudly for about three years that I had trouble sleeping... the ringing hasn't gone away entirely and it's been ten years, but I'm used to it. It sucks. It truly sucks. If you want to go to loud shows and play loud shows fine, ok it'll damage your ears and it'll catch up with you, and if you gig a lot or go to a lot of shows it'll catch up with you pretty quick ... but practice at stupid volume on a regular basis in the garage with a nice concrete floor and you'll blow your ears _fast_ guaranteed. It's just absolutely crazy.

Katie,

I'd just like to chime in here. I used to be in a band...a very very HEAVY metal band...and we rehearsed at extremely loud volumes. We had long hair, drank a lot, wore black, and thought we were bada$$es, but one thing we ALWAYS did was wear earplugs at practice. People can think you're being anal if they want, but there's already enough evidence on this thread to show that it's the smart thing to do. I am personally really glad I did.

They make rubber ones with little metal thingys inside that filter out all the harmful frequencies and don't muffle the sound much. Those are the best ones. Foam ones are ok, really anything is better than nothing, but the rubber ones I found to be best.

seriously, you -have- to wear plugs if you are really rocking out. IMHO, not having 'real' earplugs is no excuse. my two favorties: chew on a torn off piece of a cocktail napkin (the ones without the colors taste better) and then rip it in half to make some, or use two cigarette filters (unsmoked is, again, preferable) --you can pinch the filter paper and roll it back and forth until you squeeze out the cotton, then fold 'em in half). these both make perfectly good earplugs. The oaoer ones actually block a lot of high midrrange and treble, but then you can hear the lyrics better at shows anyway, and still feel all the bass. And you wont believe how loud the crowd is when the shows over and you take 'em out!
