OUCH!! Don't try this at home.
Here's a painful playing experience:
After trimming the left hand nails really short, I practiced some licks on the higher frets. While bending the first string with fingers 2 and 3, strings 2 and 3 are also invariably being bent but unsounded. String 2 slips over the pad of finger 3 and cuts right up underneath the nail. Just a little blood and not a major setback. The take-home lesson is to try and make sure those other strings are stabilized when doing bends!
Also, since then I have put on some lighter strings. What a world of difference! Sort of like pulling a rubber-band is easier than drawing back the string of a compound bow. So if you are having a hard time in this area, try the lighter strings.
