I've run my guitar through a whole bunch of bass amps, ranging from really bad to really good. They certainly lack the signature electric clean sound that you would expect from a good guitar amp, and many high-quality bass amps don't have reverb, but in a pinch it sounds ok. And since bass amps tend to be very powerful, you can get nice and loud with them too.

Nothing gets messed up. The bass amps have different (lower) frequency response so your high end doesn't sound very good.

On the other hand, the Fender Bassman was a bass amp before some guitar players discovered that it sounded great with guitar, wasn't it?

but back then stefan, i believe there was much less dynamic difference between bass guitar and 6-string.
these days, i think the two guitars are much farther apart in their dynamics, range and tone. (especially considering the array of effects we might use) so thats why amps have had to evolve quite a ways to meet these needs.

you can do it, nothing bad will happen.

but bass amps are not really meant to "breakup" (distort). they run loud and clean.

so unless you had an overdrive or distortion pedal, you wouldnt get any of that crankin sound - if that is important to you.
