Pick Ups

Is it generally easy to replace a pickup on a stratocaster? I know the stock pups on Mexi strats are pretty bad, and am thinking about buying one replacing the pups. Any suggesstions?

Also, can a fat strat humbucker be replaced with a chrome covered pup? Is it possible to put the pups that Les Pauls have, into the humbucker position? I saw the Big Apple Strat on-line and it had chrome covered pups, I didn't know if you can just slap a few of those pups in a fat strat and create a Big Apple Strat.

Thanks

I think its pretty easy, just make sure the pick ups you put in are in phase, unless you want them outta phase, i dont know what it would sound like though. I think any pick up that fits would work. Maybe someone else will go more in depth.

The Fender Tex-Mex pickups are fairly inexpensive pickups and they sound really good to me. You can hear them on a Jimmy Vaughn Signature Strat. The neck pickup has a bright bite. It's fairly easy to replace the pickups but you do need to solder the wires.
Tim, lovin' my strat

...why dont you try to install a new shield with the pickups already installed...its easier...just three conections... 2 on the jack and one to earth....

if the body is routed for humbucker you can put any pick-up in it.some strats are routed for single coils only while others have room for a humbucker.unscrew your pick guard and have a look.
it's very easy to install a diff pu.all you need is a little practice soldering.for humbuckers just follow the diagram that comes with the pu.

as for the chrome cover,i believe it screws to the pick ups pole pieces.if you wanted the plastic collar you probably have to screw it to the strat pick guard and notch around or drill thru the pick guard for the height adjustment screw.unlike gibsons, fender mounts thier pu's to the pick guard so you'd have to do some minor custom work to make it fit(the collar).i would bypass the collar and just mount it to the pick guard.

Bear in mind a cover may affect the tone, i think a lot of les paul players take the covers off if they want a higher gain signal, but im not sure if this is just so that the pickup can be moved closer to the string.

You will have to rout the strat to fit a humbucker. But I think Fender ofers a dual coil pup. But I don't know the name. Maybe somebody here can help you with this.
