I've had an epiphany. There are only 4 notes that matter. The I-IV-V.

The vi is the relative minor of the I... or a chord substitution.
The ii is the relative minor of the IV... or a chord substitution.
The iii is the... well, you get the point.

This idea has helped me remember songs, because not it's all just I-IV-V and then the color - major/minor/7th/9th/13/sus2/sus4.
