Any opinions on the Barracuda strat copy?

My girlfriend just bought her first guitar today. A red metal flake Barracuda strat copy with a pearloid pick guard.

She bought it because it was pretty, and cheap ($195 canadian). It wasn't the saleseman's recommended choice, but it's got decent heft to it, and it does sound pretty clean and bright. The action is really low, but there's no buzz, or obvious weekness to my admittedly untrained ear (I've only been playing four months). The finish is gorgeous, though the fretboard is a little rough, and the frets could have been better filed.

Harmony central lists 1 highly critical review, but I haven't been able to track down _anything_ else about it on the web, and I'd never heard of Barracuda before today.

Has anyone else tried this guitar? What do you think of it? Obviously, it's a beginners guitar, but how does it stack up against something like a squier? How far should someone take it?

Any opinions or leads on more info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mo

Barracuda is proabaly just a 'name'and not an actual company. It was proabaly made in Korea,Indonisa or China.Importers can have these instruments made with any name they like and sell them under their own brandname.

i just picked up a barracuda strat copy today at a pawn shop in st.catharines,ontario,canada. it looked new & was on the rack for 59.00 canadian.........so i bought it........took it home........adjusted the neck, set up the bridge, put on new strings & was very surprised at how it sounded.......pretty much like an american strat........frets are not as smooth but for 59.00 you can't go wrong! i'd certainly play this guitar on stage no problem.

I still have my double cutaway LP copy. Had it repainted and played at a couple of open jams recently. That guitar was my first and the only original parts on it are the body and neck parts - still plays great.
