Things are bad around the world. I have a mate who is a pastry chef who in the 80's was headhunted by heaps of major hotel chains and he basically could name his own wage. He has been out of work for just over 2 years. He is working as a dishwasher in a little cafe.

Its rough .... the jobs at call centers, and the local 911 / police / EMTs are always hiring. I live near 2 universities and a community college, so those jobs and local government jobs have kept things somewhat stable. I am in Virginia, not far from Blacksburg and Roanoke.

In general yes jobs are becoming less available.

However, it also depends on your field. I for instance am a programmer. I managed to find a job instantly.

The STEM fields are definitely the way to go. Otherwise you'll have a hard time.
