Not sure what effect (if any) Tony Iommi is using there, maybe a tad bit of phaser/chorus? But, the distortion is all Laney.

Sure, but it didn't exactly give you the answer you were looking for. So I posted it down below.

That image or any other is easy to put on these forums. The more the merrier, so in case you don't know how, yet.

Here's how it was done:

The tags you need to know here are:

<img src="

and

">

The rest of it (which goes in between those two tags), is simply a string I copied and pasted from the drop down box you get when you right click on an image, and look at properties.

Copy and paste that code, then see what comes up when you PREVIEW it. I wouldn't post it, just do that when you feel the need ;)

I always thought he used a fuzz pedal for his paranoid solo.

Jacek,

It's a fact that even Iommi doesn't know exactly what effect was mixed with his studio solo in the song "Paranoid".

This is from an interview a few years back:

"The unusual distorted guitar solo was recorded straight and then processed during mixing "through a sound modulator of some sort," recalls Iommi, most likely one of the many assorted effects boxes producer, Rodger Bain collected at the time."

Although TI did use a fuzz face in live performances, which worked for him and the crowd, the album version of the song "Paranoid " was never duplicated live.

FYI (in case your interested), Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler used  "LOUD" and Fat  to create the "Sabbath Sound", for both live performances, and in the studio.

As Chris mentioned Iommi used Laney's, while Geezer used Ampeg amps.

Listening to this song today, I thought that it sounded a whole lot like a ring modulator (also called a balanced modulator or four quadrant multiplier.) After reading this discussion it seems that may be true about the "sound modulator"

Ring modulators multiply one input by another creating weird harmonics that arnt very musical, a great example is the Dalek voice from Dr. Who

I agree. It has got to be a ring modulator. At first I thought it might be an octave effect but then after closer listening it had dissonance along with it and I knew that it had to be a ring mod.

I own a zoom multi effects pedal that has ring mod effects on it. It's fun to play around with but otherwise it's pretty far fetched to be very useful.
