From extreme metal to blues?!

Yarp, I pretty much stopped writing metal about a year ago after I left my black/death metal band, Will of the Ancients.

I still love metal, and I still play it from time to time, but I felt like I was getting burnt out and losing sight of my non-metal influences. So I decided to do something I'd been meaning to do for years before that...write a blues album.

Seeing as I initially taught myself to play guitar by playing blues, it felt completely natural, and very very fun. While playing metal, it was all about technique, precision, and being progressive in terms of composition. But ever since changing direction, I've been able to focus more on feeling and groove and just plain having fun with my playing.

I should be releasing my full length solo album later this year...just a few more songs to write/record. In the meantime, here's a sampler. It's sorta in the demo stage, and it doesn't have vocals on it yet, but it's just to give you an idea of what to expect...It's kinda a marriage between my blues roots and the tonal aggression of my hard rock and metal influences as well.

Very cool Ryan. I know the feeling and relationship between metal and the blues as well. The only difference is I am old metal and my blues the same way as well.

Keep playing bro, sound great!

Thanks Randy!

Nothin' wrong with old metal or old blues though...it's some of the best stuff there is!

Cheers!

Great playing!! It's good to get out of the black and into the blue sometimes. I myself do in fact like playing blues. I can improvise a little better and concentrate more on melody and improv as opposed to technique when I'm playing metal.

Have you heard of the band Periphery? They're prog but some of their solos are smooth and jazzy:

Yeah, I've heard some of their tunes...pretty good stuff.

Lately I've been listening to Daath...Incredible band!!! Man, I gotta say Emil Werstler is one of the best guitarists I've ever seen. The guy is a total freak of nature!

He too, incorporates a lot of jazz and fusion techniques into death metal, and takes it to the 12th level! hehe

I just listened to some of their music. That's pretty good stuff! Some days I love thrash/death while other days I like more melodic stuff.

Funny part is, I remember coming across daath in a betcha can't play this vid. The guitarist is pretty talented:

Y'know, I fully acknowledge that the guys in Periphery are talented musicians, they play well and they have worked hard for their success... but I cannot stand them. Specifically the vocals. Ruins the whole band for me.

If I wanna hear "djent" I'd much rather listen to Meshuggah.

I agree with you. Periphery's vocals reminds me too much of "emo" vocals. For that reason they are not my favorite band.

At the same time, Meshuggah bores me. And it's mainly because they're so repetitive. I like to have variety and melody. Still, I do think they're innovative.

Which is why Children of Bodom is among my favorite bands. They have it all: melody, variety and legit metal vocals.

But if you want djent without vocals, listen to Animals as Leaders. Awesome band!!

Yeah I don't even really like djent. The rare time I want to listen to anything remotely resembling it, i go to meshuggah.

And yeah, animals as leaders is crazy good, but I can't take too much of their stuff, it's like almost too technical, if that makes any sense...at some point i just want to hear a song, not an exhibition of amazing technique.

Animals as Leaders has insane creativity. Jazz mixed with djent metal. Normally I have it on as background music.Even so, I feel like this band deserves lots of respect and attention.

On the other hand, Periphery is now slowly starting to make me sick lol. I think it's those emo vocals. I like clean vocals like in power metal but not these pop vocals so I see what you mean. At least they're still fresh and talented.

I'm working on vocals next. Trying to do some George Thorogood-esque stylings lol.

Don't forget, the lyrics have to be about sleazy chicks, liquor, and stuff like that! And, you're good to go! :)
