anyone play harmonica?

Anyone play harmonica? I have dabbled with it for many years, going to sit down with a Mel Bay book and make a good attempt at learning to play it well.

I go in and out messing with mine. I own 6-7 Lee Oskar's and have several keys including one in minor. As for talent on it, novice as I don't practice enough. I can pull and bend notes play basic scales but have yet to practice with recordings.

I just keep forgetting that I own them.

I got a Mel Bay book by a guy named John Major - its really good. He teaches some theory in the book. I am getting a better understanding of the modes, theory and a little bit on reading standard notes. I reviewed my old riffs I knew and got the major scale down cold, going to work on some note bends and blues as well. Have been playing along with some simple 3 chord songs.

I really just need to throw on some blues recordings and jam. I always seem to mess with the harp when nothing is on. I too have a book but never bothered to go through it in a while. Just want to experiment. Besides I always mess myself up with 5th up or down just trying to remember to play 1st position.

Ken, if you have Comcast cable there are video lessons available on there for free. I can't tell you if they're any good or not, though. Are you learning cross harp or straight harp - or both?

Alan,

Thanks for the tip.... but I don't have Comcast. Perhaps will ask around to see if I know someone in another town who does.

I am learning both cross harp and straight harp.

The book I have is really easy to follow as the author easy to read diagrams, and he also shows the different modes so there is a lot of info that I could use down the road. Its more of a reference book, but some good theory in there. I am also jamming to CDs and a backing track some, plus trying to work out some things by ear. At one point I thought I had a good grasp on bending, but now not so sure.

Good bends are the next goal.

I have fooled around with it off and on.. .mostly "off" I guess.

I am working on learning the riffs to "Knockin on Heavens Door ", as done by Eric Clapton, and trying to do some bends. Also getting acclimated and learning where more notes are located.

Its fun, almost like being a kid again learning the guitar, I find myself looking forward to getting home and playing the harp.

I heard Little Walter is the only guy in the rock n roll hall of fame as a harmonica player. He is a great one to study!
