The "Starcaster" is Fender's attempt to reach the mass market, it's kinda like a Squier Bullet. Definitely a beginner guitar, made in China.

For a while Starcasters were only in one of the mass market chains, Walmart and such. Then they decided to broaden it out a bit, so Starcaster is pretty much everywhere, while Squier is mainly focusing on their slightly higher-end "Classic Vibe" and "Vintage Modified" series.

It's a very good beginner guitar. But not a real "Fender"

I like Squier's CP. However the rules are they must be MIJ's from the E Series line (84-87). Well made and well playing guitars.

Yeah, I actually had a Squire a number of years back (mid 80's if memory serves) ...one of the best models they had, and it ROCKED! I loved it! Sold it to a friend that still has it. I owned it for a number of years, too...It was a 3-Bolt neck, large headstock (my favorite), white with mint pick guard, 3 SC, and OEM trem...PLAYED LIKE BUTTA'.

Actually wouldn't mind owning it again....

Just got another one about a month ago. Another E-Series with a maple neck. The thing is just ossum and it is the small headstock. Got some plans to improve the guitar and can't wait to give it a roll!

The MIJ guitars are great from the mid 80's. I have had a few that I sold and now regret. They were just as good as the USA models IMHO.

Whats a fair price for an E series? Might be able to get one here locally

E-series axes I have seen vary in price. Depends on whether it is Squier labled or Fender labeled.

I have seen Squier range from $200-$400 and Fender's range from $300-$700. It really depends on what and how they are equipped. The last Squier I goe was near mint for $399 and I know of a Fender selling for $600. It can vary from the seller.

This is a Squier, MIJ, looks original. Pretty clean for its age. Needs a setup but seems OK.

Its similar to classic Strat with single coils, maple fretboard, fretwire is the skinny vintage type. Tuners look original, but they are not the retro/Saf T Post types. The guy has $300 on it. I might see if the guy will take my MIM Strat (2007) as trade for it.

If you can get a straight trade, you score! If it is trade plus cash, you lose.

Thats the plan.... trade 1 for 1. Hoping they will see "Fender" and go for it.
