Bring Back the Oldies!!

As you all can tell, I tend to listen to a lot of
modern music. However, I never lived in the era of
the Beatles. I lived in the era of speed metal and
rappers.

After looking back at the music from the oldies, I
can understand why people loved it so much. It
wasn't so angry and dark. From what I can see, it
was peaceful and was closer to the soul. It brings
up emotions of tranquility and earthi-ness. Music
is not the same anymore. =(

I think one of my favorites is "Turn Turn Turn" by
the Byrds. It's just so... relaxed..

While I agree with you Adrian, I also have to disagree. That is more in regards to the angry and dark. The musical times of the blues to me share the angry and dark lives of the those individuals who wrote those songs about everyday life. However the music is not percieved that way at all. Take a listen to the lyrics of Boom Boom Out Go The Lights. The first version I heard was the Pat Traver Band. The song was awesome and with a lot of energy. When I got a chance to listen to Little Walter's version, damn that song is pretty evil.

I do have agree with you about speed metal and rap though, yes there are alot of dark material but I am sure there are some items that don't even dwell there. It is just that we are bombarded with the majority of subjects due to association of the genre.

I guess the darkest music in those days was from
bands like Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath. Regardless,
it's not nearly as dark as say bands like Rotten
Sound. No thanks~

Only remember a song or two from Blue Cheer but I used to listen to a ton of Black Sabbath. When Ozzy was the front man only the music seemed dark as they detuned there instruments on some of the songs. Classic was Into the Void where IIRC tuned down to C.

As for Rotten Sound, never heard of them and probably never will as I don't listen much to modern metal anymore. Amorphis is a far as I can go or a song to from Rammstein. They crack me up.

Grindcore to me is more depressing than death
metal because it relates very strong to today's
society. It's like punk but with added horror and
despair. Take this band for instance:

Although death metal is heavier in sound, it's not
so grungy.

Yes Amorphis is definitely more melodic and chill.

Hey Adrian,

You'd be suprised...

If you go back to the 60's & 70's, you'll see that just about EVERY SONG had a dark side....And mostly about drug use

Songs like:

Mr. Tambourine Man
Mr. Brownstone (G&R)
Purple Haze
Hurt (Pink Floyd)
Cocaine (Clapton: obviously)
White Rabbit
Lucy in the Sky
Crystal Blue Persuasion
Hotel California
Gold Dust Woman
Puff the Magic Dragon
That Smell (Skynrd)
Mother's Little Helper
Sweet Leaf (Sabbath)
Mellow Yellow (Donovan)
The Pusher (Steppenwolf)
Witchy Woman (Eagles)
The Needle and the Damage Done (Neil Young)

I could go on forever.... LOL :)

Lyrically speaking they can be dark. But if you ask
me, it's more the music, not the lyrics (lol):
