Try playing softer, are you strumming chords, picking notes, finger picking.

the best way that I have found t mute an acoustic is to use my palm. Using someone els's sox and spraying insulation foam are great ideas, but you must be carefull not to spray too much. they do make sound hole plastic circle thingamajigs which probably work well. the best suggestion so far, i think, is to stuff a cat in there

there's another thing you can do, although I'm sure this isn't by any means a conventional solution..

next time you're restringing, see if you can find a piece of material that's soft enough to absorb a bit of energy from the strings but not too thick, and not too big of a piece either. maybe a thin strip of rubber cut from surgical tubing or something similar.

lay it over the bridge saddle, and restring as normal, strings anchoring down the absorbent material.

this should dampen some of the strings' vibration energy going to the soundboard, and should, in theory, quiet the guitar significantly.

although like I said, this isn't a conventional solution, and probably one that not many ppl have tried, but it should work.

Most cities have some kind of ordinance about how loud ya can play yer stereo..or gittar..so many decibles, or whatever.

I'm thinkin', if yer in yer house playin' an acoustic gittar, ya probably ain't exceeding any noise restrictions.

So, unless you're just an extremely nice guy that don't mind bending over backwards to suit yer neighbors...and if ya ain't playin' late at night and keepin' 'em awake...I guess I'd tell 'em what part of me they could kiss.

Have ya tried playin' in a different room? Damn, I don't guess I'd want to do anything to muffle one of my axes, it ain't natural.

I know I'm not exceeding any decibel limitations but I do play a lot late at night and I'm talking 3,4,5,6am type-late!

I am a nice guy, but I'm not that nice, my neighbour however is a bit of a shady character, not the kind you want to get on the wrong side of!

Hey dude, I know its not similiar, but Malcolm Young of AC/DC used newspaper stuffed inside his gretsch to get a better tone! I know his was electric but as Captain Kirk said to Scotty when he suggested pointing the photon modulators at the dilithium crystals to get out on impulse power, IT MIGHT JUST WORK!!!God I need to stop the drugs!
