iPhone/iPod Touch App - iReal Book - Pure Gold!

One of the things I have been enjoying this past year is going jam meetups (blues and jazz). Well last night I attended the monthly Jazz Standards meetup and came across one of the coolest apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch. It is called iReal Book. I wish this type of application was around in my younger days as it would make jamming over Real Book changes easier. In the old daze, well my old daze you had to use a program like "Band in a Box" (still around) and program all of the changes in and then jam. Or you could use the Jamey Aebersold series but that doesn't answer the Real Book tunes. And finally, jam with either records/tapes or CD's (shows my age). This all in hoping that you find some people to play with and work on these standard tunes. Welcome the iReal Book. Dang for $9.99 you get about 900 songs that has Piano/Bass/Drums accompaniment where you can jam over the changes with the different feels (additional $5.99 for the Jazz Pack). Totally sweet!!! :D

That looks like a cool app.....but wouldn't you get an eye strain using it on an iPhone ?

If you don't change keys, just use your Real Book. If you transpose, just send the info to a printer and print yourself a leadsheet.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having it on an iPhone? I mean, why waste paper.....become environment friendly and save those trees.

Yes and No. If you only want charts, you are better off with an iPAD - I don't own one. I've had my Real Books for over 20 years so no paper wasted. Also my purpose for the app is the ability to jam over the changes (900 songs) with using external programs (Band in a Box), midi, or any other type of programming. I can go anywhere and still work on the tunes.

Hey Randy, how do you interface the two programs on the ipad? Sounds interesting.

Jim - the original app had most of the Real Book tunes loaded in the program. You can also make your own progressions as well. The really cool thing is that it has its own band in a box. It consists of drums, bass and piano. You can change the tempos, feel or styles (bossa, swing, etc.), speed and can mix the instruments to your choice. If you don't want an instrument such as piano and only want bass and drums, you can reduce the volume to zero. The system even allows you to change keys and the chart will automatically update to the new key. Send the information out as an email and you can print the chart - Hope that helps.

It was - lol. The app has changed in that all of the loaded Real Book tunes are not part of the package anymore due to copyrights. However purchasers of the product prior to change will not be affected by the upgrade. The functionality still remains though so if you wanted to load songs on your own, you can still do it. Kind of a bummer for the new purchasers though as your playing standards now must be manually entered.
