I have a love hate relationship with that song. I love to play it with a strong rhythm section who can keep the groove punchy and strong, decent vocalist (sings better than me) who knows the words inside and out enough to own it.

I hate to butcher it, along with Sweet Home Alabama, Hotel California, Johny B Goode, Bobby McGee......

Mustang does need a good singer and a good strong rhythm.

LOL, love the flow-chart!

I feel that if you HAVE a band geared towards playing that kind of stuff (with some brass in the band) and a decent vocalist, that, that's great. Otherwise, for a basic band to play MS in a club, it has a tendency to not sound right. Seems that most generic bar/club bands can't pull it off.

There used to be a local band in my area (that I filled-in for the guitarist a couple times) and they had a nice 3 piece brass/horn section, and focused on material specifically from the 60's (Ides of March, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, James Brown, etc) that really had the dynamic & proper musicians to do this material, and they did it very well! Very cool band...But, I've seen a bunch of basic bar bands that tried this song (and others like it) that just couldn't pull it off.

I'd play the song twice. Once for the good-looking women and once for the guys that like to dance with the good-looking women.
