Chris, long time no talk. Congrats on getting a super nice axe. (The PRS)
However, I don't think you have what you think you have. The McCarty model didn't start production until 1994.
Alot of PRS guitars get modded to whats known as McSwitching. This is because the 5 way rotary switching system tends to be cumbersome at best.
If your guitar is truly pre 1992 and has a 3 way toggle and a coil tap on the tone pot this is what has happened to it, and it would probably be a Custom 22.
If your guitar is actually a McCarty, it isn't pre-92. All of this can be figured out by getting with PRS customer service, checking your serial number, or asking the nice folks at The Forums@Birds and moons. There are lots of ways to tell what you have. Pull your pickups and see what is written in the cavities is a sure fire way if it hasn't been really gone over. Other than that it's all about the serial number.
Oh yeah, everyone touts the pre-92 as a good thing because of the small neck heel. I think it's a load of crap and I own one. (pre-92 out of 7 PRSi) If you want true vintage, good feel, and vibe, find a mid to late eighties custom with a sweet switch. Good luck on finding one that hasn't been beat to crap and paying less than 5K though. (and watch out for fakes.)
Congrats again and trust me; it you traded a non custom shop or master-built fender for a PRS you definitely got the better end of the deal. Unless it's an SE!!! LOL!!!
