What's your favorite guitar... and why

My favorite guitar is my Godin LG-SP90.

I like this guitar for a few reasons, first it's sustain is incredible. The guitar is strung through the body for additional string length and tension.

The tone is also very rich. With a mahogany body and a flamed maple top it is both sonically rich and beautiful to look at.

Further, this guitar has a special run of pickups designed by Mr. Duncan himself for the 100 of these guitars that was made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of NAMM.

The neck radius and scale is phenominal and the natural resonance makes this guitar sound almost like a hollow bodied guitar.

My favorite guitar is always the one that happens to be in my hands at the time...;-)

Aside from that..I love the feel and classic tones of my gibson 335.....just cant bear the thought of taking it out to the campfire for the family singalongs...hence the other 7 or eight guitars in my closet.

Stayin' in Tune,

One is a late 90's sunburst classic and the other a 68 gold top with P90's.

Hey, I was never a huge PRS fan myself, HOWEVER, I have to say that when I traded my Strat for this PRS, I got an honest-to-goodness genuine PRE-1992 McCarty model, in mint cond.

Both of us made out very well. My strat was purchased new, (USA American Deluxe model) always kept in pristine condition, and worth about the same amt of $$ as the PRS.

The only issue I have with the PRS is this:
The PRS is great while I'm standing, using a guitar strap, but, not very balanced while sitting in the chair. (Nothing like the Strat)...BUT, it's a wonderful sounding guitar, with super tone....THAT I have to admit!

The Carvin....Sitting, standing....no difference! VERY BALANCED!!!!!!

It's interesting because just like the past, some who loved Gibson's couldn't play Fender's and vice versa. My issue with the PRS was the sound or tone of the instrument. Like the other discussion regarding mid scooping with the amps, guitars to make a great impact on the overall tone. One of the reps in my company has a PRS that I tried. The feel was really different and the sound not my personality. Even in my old Heart tribute band the other guitar player had a PRS that I tried - same reaction from me.

Alex Lifeson of RUSH plays them as well and his tone with it does not match up in my head. Granted his Fender Strats (Hentor's lol) and Gibson's did.

Go figure....

Chris, long time no talk. Congrats on getting a super nice axe. (The PRS)

However, I don't think you have what you think you have. The McCarty model didn't start production until 1994.

Alot of PRS guitars get modded to whats known as McSwitching. This is because the 5 way rotary switching system tends to be cumbersome at best.

If your guitar is truly pre 1992 and has a 3 way toggle and a coil tap on the tone pot this is what has happened to it, and it would probably be a Custom 22.

If your guitar is actually a McCarty, it isn't pre-92. All of this can be figured out by getting with PRS customer service, checking your serial number, or asking the nice folks at The Forums@Birds and moons. There are lots of ways to tell what you have. Pull your pickups and see what is written in the cavities is a sure fire way if it hasn't been really gone over. Other than that it's all about the serial number.

Oh yeah, everyone touts the pre-92 as a good thing because of the small neck heel. I think it's a load of crap and I own one. (pre-92 out of 7 PRSi) If you want true vintage, good feel, and vibe, find a mid to late eighties custom with a sweet switch. Good luck on finding one that hasn't been beat to crap and paying less than 5K though. (and watch out for fakes.)

Congrats again and trust me; it you traded a non custom shop or master-built fender for a PRS you definitely got the better end of the deal. Unless it's an SE!!! LOL!!!

YO BROTHER! WHERE YOU BEEN????

LOL, It's not an SE model!

I'll check the serial number, and I may have mis-typed the year. But, if memory serves it's pre '93??? (fairly positive) My brain ain't what it used to be.

But, the good thing is that it's a great model, plays beautiful, and sounds really nice. (All black with Natural binding, and chrome PU's)

My buddy is a big Strat fan (as am I) and he really loved my strat (since the day I bought it in 2000), so, we just did an even swap. We're both very happy with the deal. He did some minor mods to the strat, by removing the Vintage Noiseless PU's, and installing the Texas Specials. He's now in Strat Heaven LOL

The only thing I need to do is replace the bridge (on the PRS) with a newer one. I spoke to a luthier friend of mine that said all those earlier PRS models had a minor intonation issue due to the OEM bridge, and they way it was originally designed. So, he replaced the pickups, and I'll replace the brige...We both made a good deal.

Certainly it was worth the swap!!!

My Favorite guitar is a 2004 USA Fender deluxe strat finished in a cherry burst that has to be seen to be believed. The Fender Shop was having a good spray day when she was made.

I have replaced the stock SCN pickups with Kinman Woodstock pickups as I feel the SCNs sound dull and lifeless. This guitar plays so smooth and the sound from the pups and the woods is really snappy. The rosewood neck is really smooth and fits my hand like a glove. Its the most comfortable neck I have ever had.

Kinman offers either a 5, 7 or a 9 way switch for his pickups and I opted for the 7 way as I feel this is the best tone settings for me. Kinam pickups are some of the best truly no noise pickups I have tried. I don't just say this because Kinman's are made in Australia.

I wish I knew how to put pics and sound clips on the web so I could post some.

I can't get enough of those Carvins I tell ya. I know you feel the same. I'm so glad you went for the Carvin when we were talking about you purchasing one a while back. I remember how excited you were when you placed your order and how it seemed like it took forver for the thing to get there. I remember the day I got an email from you with awesome pics of your new baby. Hahahaha! Nothing like opening that case and seeing it for the first time and smelling that paint eh? ;)

I remember being scared to open the case for the first time all the time. Hahaha! I was a bit misled with the brown one. I thought it would be more of a dark brown with the quilt somewhat glistening it up a bit. Instead it came in a bit like milk chocolate brown. It actually looks like it has red hi-lites in it when pictures are taken of it. I actually get more compliments on the brown one from people once they see it...but like you, my heart belongs to ole blondie. LOL!!

The purple one is pretty cool too....but I didn't get actives in that..which was a mistake. I never really liked active pups to be honest. But man, they just do so much for my clean sound, I'd be lost without them now. I don't use them for dirty tones ever, but for cleans...man, what a difference!
