I posted part of this as an answer to another psot, but thought I'd bouncing it off everyone to get some (pun intended) feedback.
I've been experimenting with lowering my gains for a heavier sound. While that sounds counter-intuitive, it really works. It came from 2 different articles I read from Mark Morton of Lamb of God and Kerry King of Slayer. These are 2 of the heaviest bands on the planet, and they are reducing the gains to get more clarity in the chunking and chords. If it works for them...

Dean DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots) does something similar by running one amp clean and the other dirty. Blend the two and you chunky and crunch in one flavor! |

Sounds like a good experiment. when I get the time to practice again (curse giant presentations) I'll try it and give some feedback on how it works for me. |

I use Line 6 stuff that allows 2 amps simultaneously, and the dirty/clean thing is fun. It can also be a bit sloppy in that 2 different amp models are going to respond differently to pick attack, even when they're an amp model. I just need to experiment more. |

my 3 channel preamp can do this. it's pretty cool i must say. and it does give an airiness that nothing else can.
