Hey there, Charles,

Yeah, Hendrix opened the door for some of today's harder rock players (I would tend to agree)....He was an "OK" player, but, he was a better "showman". I wouldn't rave about his technical skills, but, that's my opinion.

If I had to choose just one, it would be next to impossible. There's a million great players out there.

But........

The guy I'm choosing is not who I think is the "best" player in the world, BUT, more importantly, it's the guy who really got me into wanting to play guitar in the first place, and that person would be Glenn Tipton (from Judas Priest).

Back in 1979 or 1980, when I first heard the song "Dreamer Deceiver" from the "Sin After Sin" album....MAN! I was FREAKIN' HOOKED! From that point on, I had to learn guitar! The entire band, from Rob Halford, to Glenn Tipton, KK Downing, and the rest of the band......I WANTED TO BE IN THAT BAND!!! HELL, I still do! LOL

However, as for earlier players that I admire, I go with Blackmore, Uli Roth...etc

And most notably, I'd probably have to pick Les Paul. For without him, there wouldn't have been so many things like, oh, I don't know.....Howabout THE ELECTRIC GUITAR (LOL), Multi-Track recording, delay effects, and so much more. Not to mention, a damn good player back in his day!

Mike Bloomfield is awesome! He was a major influence on one of my current favorites - Robben Ford. Listen to Mike with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band - That is great stuff!

Some incredibly guitar platers in terms of technique and voicings are:

Andy Sumners - from the Police
Dominic Miller - plays with Sting

These 2 guitar players always strive to come up with the right chords for the right part of the song coupled with the right technique.

For me it changes after every decade it seems. It is primarily my change in tastes as a guitar player as well as what I have learned. Being a diverse chameleon type player, my taste range and taste is extreme. My current favorites are Danny Gatton, Robben Ford, Zakk Wylde, Brent Mason, Wes Montgomery, Luis Bonfa and Magic Sam Maggett.

Years ago I enjoyed the VH, Beck, Malmsteen, Takasaki, and on and on and on.

My favorites change all the time too. I like just about every player mentioned here, but I've never heard Bloomfield. I've seen his name mentioned countless times. I'll have to check him out on youtube. Thanks for the heads up.

There are too many favorites to mention, Brian Setzer and Danny Gatton are a couple that I always come back to.

BTW- I think what made Hendrix so awesome was not so much his technical ability, but his innovations and most importantly, his feel.

Setzer is phenominal! I left his name out because I am not in that mode at this time. My only crux with him is that his stuff is all worked out. I would love to hear him just go off. He does an annual Christmas show out here that we went to religiously. The big band stuff is just killer!!!

I agree about Hendrix. What I like about him is the songwriting and the textures that he used in in his songs. He loved the third in the root of a chord and built numerous double stops around that chord.

Dan if you get the album "Paul Butterfield Blues Band", this one has Bloomfield all over it. This is the one that came out in 1965.
