Got me some Amp Gas

After much debate I picked up an amp that I never thought I'd own...a Krank. It's the Chadwick, 50W 2 Channel amp. It sounds like a classic British tube amp. Kind of like a Marshall JMP/AC-30 on steroids. What, you say? A Krank amp that doesn't sound like a mish mash of nu-metal solid state vomit? Yes...it's true. I, like most, was conditioned to believe that Krank was a one trick pony. That is, until I started playing a Chadwick at my rehearsal studio every week.

The Clean Channel is big and fat and has it's own Gain knob!!!! It sparkles like a Roland with the gain reduced and enters AC/DC rhythm territory when pushed.

The Drive Channel has 3 gain stages to mess with (volume, gain, and a switchable drive push pot) and has an envelope knob which lets you control the amount of gain in the last stage of the preamp. Kind of bright and brittle sounding when turned down (think Tooth and Nail era George Lynch) and with the envelope turned up it gets a warmer, more compressed feel.

It uses Sovtek 5881's in the Power section. I've never used these before but have no complaints. I had a gig last Friday night where I used the amp for the first time in my ACDC Tribute band. I heard the amp bloom in the FOH system. For those of you who play live on a regular basis, you'll understand what I mean. The chords felt powerful and responded to pick attack. Strumming an E Major chord was like hearing color!...no I'm not taking the brown acid. =)

I could see the crowd react to the sound during key points in songs and I knew that I had made the right choice.

If you haven't checked out one of these amps, you really should give them an open-minded look. They also have a new head coming called the 1980, which is purported to be a juiced up JCM800 and goes for the coveted 80's Hair Metal tone.

Another reason I chose to go with this amp is that Krank happens to be a local company located in Tempe, Arizona...only about 10 minutes from my house.

That sounds cool Kev! I have heard of Krank and it wasn't the drug that I was thinking of. I just saw ads for them but have never heard the amp. I know that Pod has a simulation for them in the heavy metal sounds but that is all I know. As for the JCM800 from 1980, I am a proud user and owner.

Currently I am having GAS for some boxes made by "xotic". I gotta save up some cash and go check it out.

Cool!!

I've been waiting for an amp that has a good, Marshall-ish sound on one side, and something close to a clean Fender on the other. Has my boat come in??

..and it;s the official amp of Dethklok!!!

Check the website Kev! Lots of name players but not in the Heavy Metal realm. A lot of the players listed I have alot of admiration for such as Steve Lukather, Scott Henderson, Carl Verheyan and Brent Mason. The list is just filled with studio cats.
